Every season, Lola Founder & Creative Director Tommy Higham edits his world down to the essentials, and this season, he's letting us in. From decor picks to styling approaches, here's how Tommy is refreshing his homes. From Utah to New York City. But First, Blankets Blankets play an integral role in the way our space shows up for us, from their color to their texture to their touch. If you're someone who isn't sure where to start when it comes to revitalizing your space, chances are your blankets are a solid place to start. Consider them the base. Rich, dark textures ground while light, airy textures brighten. Begin with a neutral then play with color. When refreshing my space, I like to switch out my neutrals to keep things feeling fresh and revitalized. At my place in Utah, the space is minimal by design; lots of windows, lots of light. Antique Ivory feels right there. It adds just enough warmth without disrupting the quiet of it. Seasonally swapping your neutrals is an easy, risk-free way to switch up the energy of your space. Just Add Color To bring energy and life into your home, I like to play with color in intentional ways — layering it in without letting it take over. Pillows are a simple way to do this through smaller pops of texture and color. Lately, I've been styling our pillows in the Greenhouse color to genuinely bring the feeling of the outside in. In my apartment in the West Village, I've also been reaching for our Rainy Night print. It brings a cool yet versatile energy into the space. New York has its own energy: layered, dynamic, always something happening, and this print matches that. The kind of piece that looks intentional whether you're layering it on a couch or draping it across a bed, it brings a cool, moody tone into a space without ever overpowering it. Don't Forget Your Pets Our pets deserve the same level of comfort we curate for ourselves. Just as I refresh my space each season, I make a point to do the same for them. The Lola Pet Pad from our Pet Collection brings that same life-changing softness to your pet's everyday routine — a simple upgrade that makes a real difference. My cat Matilda cannot get enough of hers. She lives on it. The neutral colors help in keeping the space feeling grounded and clean. Intentionality is everything. Choosing what stays, what goes, and what gets refreshed. Whether it's swapping in a new neutral, adding a pop of color through a pillow, or upgrading your pet's everyday; the smallest shifts can completely transform the energy of a space. That's the edit.

There's a difference between a home that looks warm in photos and one that actually feels warm to live in. The first is a styling problem. The second is a sensory one. Most people approach home comfort the way they approach home decor: visually. They add objects, change colors, rearrange furniture. Some of it works. Most of it misses because the things that make a home genuinely feel warm and soft are tactile and atmospheric, not decorative. You feel them before you see them. This checklist is built around that distinction. Every item on it earns its place by contributing something you can sense, not just photograph. The goal is a home that registers as warm and comfortable the moment you walk in, and stays that way through the parts of the day that matter most. What Actually Makes a Home Feel Warm Before the checklist, a brief orientation. Warmth in a home is the product of four things working together, and understanding them makes every subsequent decision easier. Temperature and warmth perception. The thermostat handles the literal temperature. Everything else handles how warm the space feels, which is a different variable. Warm light, warm textures, and warm tones on surfaces all contribute to the perception of warmth independent of actual room temperature. A room at 70 degrees with cool white lighting and bare floors feels colder than the same room with warm bulbs, a rug, and a throw on the couch. Softness. Hard floors with no rugs, bare furniture with no throws, uncovered windows with no curtains: each of these registers as cold regardless of what the thermometer says. Softness is both a tactile reality and a visual one. The eye reads a room with soft surfaces as warmer than a room without them. Scent. One of the fastest and most underestimated environmental cues. A home with a consistent, considered scent reads as inhabited and intentional in a way that purely visual styling cannot replicate. Scent reaches people before they've registered anything else about the space. Enclosure and scale. Large open spaces feel warm only when broken into defined zones. A living room with a sofa floating in the middle of it and no contained lighting reads as cold regardless of the furniture quality. Smaller defined areas with soft furnishings and contained light sources do the work that scale alone cannot. These four variables are the framework. Everything on the checklist addresses at least one of them. The Textile Checklist Textiles are the foundation. Everything else builds on top of them, and no amount of lighting or scent compensates for a home that's physically cold to the touch. The main blanket, Lola’s Original. The single highest-impact item on this entire list. It lives on the couch or the reading chair and gets reached for every day without conscious decision-making. This is the piece where quality matters most because it has the most contact with the most people the most often. Lola's OEKO-TEX certified faux fur delivers life-changing softness that registers immediately, and it drapes over a couch in a way that makes the whole room look more considered. A bed throw as a second layer. Separate from the main bedding, available for the middle-of-the-night pull without disturbing the covers. The foot of the bed is its natural home. It also contributes visually to a bed that's otherwise working in flat linens and cottons, adding texture and dimension that a duvet alone doesn't provide. Pillows with real softness. Not the pillows that get moved to the floor the moment you sit down. Pillows you actually lean into on the couch or the reading chair, that add genuine tactile comfort to wherever you spend the most time. Lola's pillow brings the same OEKO-TEX certified faux fur softness as the throw, in a format that earns its place on the couch rather than just occupying it. A quality area rug. Warm underfoot, defines the zone, absorbs sound, and changes the entire atmosphere of a hard-floored room. Natural fibers for warmth and longevity. High-pile for maximum softness underfoot in spaces where you spend the most time sitting or standing barefoot. Curtains that reach the floor. Curtains that stop at the window frame read as unfinished and let cold air pool at the base of the window. Floor-length curtains add visual height, insulate against drafts, and contribute more to the warmth of a room than almost any other single textile decision. The Lighting Checklist Lighting is the fastest variable to change and the one with the most immediate impact on how a space feels. Wrong bulbs can undermine everything else in a room. Warm bulbs throughout. 2700K or lower, every room. This is the single most cost-effective change you can make to a home that feels cold. Cool white light is a deliberate aesthetic choice that works in minimal, clinical spaces. In a home meant to feel warm, it works against everything else you're trying to do. A lamp in every room that needs to feel warm. Overhead lighting alone makes a room feel like a waiting room regardless of the furniture. A lamp beside the sofa, a lamp on the bedside table, a lamp in the reading corner. Each one creates a pool of warm light that anchors the space and makes overhead lighting optional rather than necessary. Candles as a third layer. The movement of a flame is a sensory input that no bulb replicates. A Lola candle on a coffee table or dining surface changes the quality of the light in the entire room and adds scent simultaneously. Dimmers where possible. The ability to reduce overhead lighting in the evening is one of the highest-return home upgrades available. A dimmer switch costs almost nothing and changes the entire atmosphere of a room after dark. The Scent Checklist Scent is often the last thing people address and one of the first things anyone notices upon entering a space. A signature scent for the main living area. One Lola candle with a consistent warm, woody, or softly floral note that becomes associated with the space over time. Scent memory is among the strongest sensory memories humans have. A home with a considered, consistent scent registers as more intentional and more inhabited than the same home without one. Consistency over intensity. A scent that appears occasionally is a pleasant moment. A scent that's present reliably becomes part of how the home feels. Burn the candle regularly rather than saving it for guests. One scent per room. Competing scents in adjacent spaces create olfactory noise that undermines the atmosphere you're building. Each room can have its own scent identity, but they should sit at opposite ends of a room transition rather than overlapping. The Warmth and Temperature Checklist The physical layer that the other three build on. A Lola throw within reach of every primary seat. Not stored in a basket across the room or folded on a shelf. On the arm of the chair, draped over the couch corner, at the foot of the bed. Accessibility is what makes a throw part of daily life rather than something you retrieve on the coldest nights. If it requires getting up to get it, it won't be used as often as it should be. Warm tones on at least one surface per room. A terracotta pot, a warm wood tray, an earthen-toned pillow. Rooms built entirely in cool greys and whites can feel warm, but they require significantly more deliberate work on the textile and lighting layers to compensate. One warm-toned object gives the eye somewhere to land that reads as inviting rather than austere. No unaddressed drafts. A room with a draft will not feel warm regardless of what's in it. Before adding anything to the checklist, close the gaps at windows, doors, and baseboards. Cold air entering a space undermines every other decision on this list. The Room-by-Room Checklist The items above apply everywhere. These are the two or three moves that matter most in each specific room. Living Room. The main Lola Blanket within reach of the primary seat. A lamp beside the sofa, separate from overhead lighting. A rug that defines the conversation zone. A Lola candle on the coffee table. These four items do more for a living room's warmth than any furniture or paint decision. Bedroom. A second Lola throw at the foot of the bed. Blackout or heavyweight curtains that reach the floor. Warm bulbs in the bedside lamps only, overhead off after dark. A Lola pillow for genuine softness beyond the standard sleeping set. Reading Corner. The Lola throw as the non-negotiable centerpiece. A dedicated lamp at reading height with a warm bulb. A side surface within reach for a drink and a bookmark. Book storage accessible without leaving the chair. Entryway. The first sensory impression of the home. A warm-toned rug underfoot. A single lamp or sconce on a warm bulb. One candle. Thirty seconds of warmth that sets the register for everything that follows. Your Cozy Home Starts With One Good Blanket A warm, soft home is built in layers, but it starts somewhere specific. The textile layer is the foundation everything else sits on, and the throw is the piece you'll reach for every single day without thinking about it. Start there. Add a lamp. Change your bulbs to warm white. Light a candle. Those four things will change how your home feels faster than anything else on this list. The rest is the long game, and this checklist will still be here when you're ready for it. Shop cozy home essentials at Lola Blankets
