A paragraph is a group of sentences or a single sentence that supports one, and only one, main idea or "controlling idea". Effective paragraphs are unified, coherent, and well-developed, typically consisting of a topic sentence, supporting sentences, and a concluding sentence. They usually range from 75–200 words, or three to eight sentences, and act as the building blocks for organizing ideas in writing.
